I am a keen sportsman, and when I am not working, you will find me out on the water, scuba diving and fishing. I am also a former New Zealand Olympic Weightlifting representative.
Hi, I’m Alan
I grew up in Lower Hutt and have lived here all my life. I started Chimney Magic Ltd back in 1999 so I am one of the more experienced chimney sweeps in our region.
That’s over 25 years’ experience, servicing and repairing wood burners, conducting safety inspections, and doing chimney sweeps. In that time, I have worked on over 30,000 chimneys. As you can imagine, I have got really good at it.
I look after a lot of regular customers, with about 2,500 homeowners across the Hutt Valley and the northern suburbs of Wellington.
I am the owner-operator of Chimney Magic. When you call to book a service, you get me. When I turn up, it’s me doing the work. And when you need me again next year, it’s still me.
Behind the scenes, Leonie looks after the admin and keeps everything running smoothly, so between us you’re always well looked after. I think that personal touch is why so many of my customers have rebooked me for years, and why so much of my work comes from them telling their friends and neighbours.
What I specialise in
My focus is providing a full mobile service to keep your wood burner safe and doing a good job of keeping you warm. This includes chimney sweeping, wood burner repairs, and safety reports. Wood burner servicing and repairs in particular are my speciality. I’ve been servicing them for a long time now, and I carry most replacement parts in the van.
From wobbly door seals to fires that just won’t draw, I’ve probably seen your model many times over, so I can usually diagnose the problem quickly and fix it on the spot. I can advise on how to use your wood burner and troubleshoot any problems with you, to get the best out of your fire.

On time, every time.
Because I run the whole business myself, there’s no waiting around and no missed appointments. When I say I’ll be there, I’m there.
No mess.
I cover your floors and surrounds with drop sheets before I start any work, so you’d never know I’d been, except for a fire that runs beautifully.
Honest advice.
I’ll tell you what your fire actually needs, and what it doesn’t. If something can wait, I’ll say so. If a repair makes more sense than a replacement, I’ll tell you that too.
A yearly reminder.
Every customer gets a friendly text from me once a year when your annual service is due. It’s one less thing for you to remember, and it keeps your fire safe and ready before winter.
